A stone fireplace is probably one of the most unique and attractive types of fireplaces we can find. And there are so many types of stones that can be utilized for fireplaces such as these. When you consider at how each stone varies in different textures and colors for a fireplace, those stones would really make it look very beautiful.

Generally there are two types of stone used for fireplaces, the cultured stone and the natural stone. The cultured stone is lighter in weight and easier to handle and clean compared to the natural stone. Natural stone however, is much better in terms of to attractiveness and timelessness.

Types of Stones for the Stone Fireplaces

The most widely used stone for a stone fireplace are limestone, slate, granite and marble. These stones are the types which are commonly requested or purchased by many homeowners as materials for their fireplaces.

The marble stone is considered as the classic type of stone fireplace and it comes in several unique colors including white, black, and also pink, and there are many more colors to choose from. Another thing is that the marble fireplace has a smoother surface and it gives us a formal look and feel. The marble used on a stone fireplace can also be polished and maintained easily.

The granite stone is another well known stone, and it is the stone of choice for many house owners. The color of the material itself and its hardiness are top notches. It doesn’t require a lot of maintenance and it is very easy to cleanup as well. Extra polishing is really unnecessary when having granite for a stone fireplace.

The Slate stone lends a very country and rustic look to your fireplace. Slate is also has a classic look and feel, and could be less expensive than the marble or the granite. The only problem a slate stone fireplace might have is it can be stained easily and the stains are sometimes quite difficult to wipe clean and may even be permanent.

Lime is an often used stone for stone fireplaces as well and it is mainly for the purpose to gain the antique look of your house. This type of material is quite porous and will need some time to clean up when soot gets in the way. Sometimes lime can be soft too which is why coating of water sealant is needed to improve its durability. The stone materials mentioned just now can also benefit from water sealant coating, both single or double coating.

Every natural stone medium that is used for a stone fireplace highlighted just now are all very attractive and beautiful. That’s why many people choose stone fireplace for their indoor and even outdoor fireplaces because these natural stone comes in a lot of colors and shapes. Because of these many choices to choose from, the materials for your fireplace can be as extravagant or as simple as you wish depending on your liking.
